Wegmann automotive (which acquired longtime North American supplier Plombco) is the world's largest manufacturer of wheel balancing weights, supplying both OEM assembly plants and the tire-service aftermarket. Balancing weights correct for the small manufacturing variances in wheel and tire mass distribution that would otherwise cause vibration at speed; clip-on steel weights hook onto the wheel's rim flange, while adhesive-backed stick-on weights (often zinc or steel, with lead now largely phased out for environmental reasons) mount to the inner wheel barrel, commonly used on alloy wheels where a visible clip-on weight would be undesirable.
