ZF's occupant-safety division, built substantially on the legacy TRW Automotive business, is one of the two or three suppliers that dominate global airbag module production. A module consists of a folded nylon cushion, an inflator (a pyrotechnic gas generator or hybrid gas/pyrotechnic unit), and a housing that mounts in the steering wheel hub, dashboard, seat, or roof rail depending on application. Dual-stage inflators, used widely since the 2000s, allow the airbag control unit to modulate deployment force based on crash severity and occupant size, and passenger-side modules are typically larger-volume than driver modules to bridge the greater distance to the occupant.
